I&#8217;m the second son from the rock. Notice that even at an early age I&#8217;m smiling&#8230;but it&#8217;s not reaching my eyes. We&#8217;re still debating who&#8217;s the three-tenths of a child.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For a while, it seemed like a stable isotope<br \/>\nBut before too long the nucleus split<br \/>\nThe proton trying to share more neutrons<br \/>\nthan a stable configuration could afford<\/p>\n<p>and the neutron went off on its own<br \/>\nelectrons still in orbit<br \/>\nif somewhat erratically<\/p>\n<p>The proton tried other pairings<br \/>\nquite a few, in fact<br \/>\nfinally settling down for a while<br \/>\nbefore the inevitable decay<\/p>\n<p>The neutron never became a real element again<br \/>\nbut neither considered it a half-life<br \/>\nfor a neutron needs a proton<br \/>\nlike a fission reactor needs\u00a0 a bicycle<\/p>\n<p>The electrons went their own erratic ways<br \/>\nbecoming protons and neutrons<br \/>\n(don&#8217;t say it can&#8217;t be done)<br \/>\njoining and splitting as these things happen<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s us, the classic 50&#8217;s nuclear family of 2.3 children.
