That’s us, the classic 50’s nuclear family of 2.3 children. I’m the second son from the rock. Notice that even at an early age I’m smiling…but it’s not reaching my eyes. We’re still debating who’s the three-tenths of a child.<\/em><\/p>\n

For a while, it seemed like a stable isotope
\nBut before too long the nucleus split
\nThe proton trying to share more neutrons
\nthan a stable configuration could afford<\/p>\n

and the neutron went off on its own
\nelectrons still in orbit
\nif somewhat erratically<\/p>\n

The proton tried other pairings
\nquite a few, in fact
\nfinally settling down for a while
\nbefore the inevitable decay<\/p>\n

The neutron never became a real element again
\nbut neither considered it a half-life
\nfor a neutron needs a proton
\nlike a fission reactor needs\u00a0 a bicycle<\/p>\n

The electrons went their own erratic ways
\nbecoming protons and neutrons
\n(don’t say it can’t be done)
\njoining and splitting as these things happen<\/p>\n
