I warned her,<br \/>\nAs the commercial blared<br \/>\nThey&#8217;ll hear you.<br \/>\nBut she didn&#8217;t know<br \/>\nThat the Nielsen ears were listening<br \/>\nAnd the knock at the door<br \/>\nWasn&#8217;t the pizza man<br \/>\nAfter all.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They took her away<br \/>\nTo a gray room filled with light<br \/>\nfrom a rounded screen.<br \/>\nAnd made her watch<br \/>\nGray images of the modern farmer<br \/>\nIt was all that was on at 5am,<br \/>\nAnd grotesquely cheerful shows<br \/>\nwith freckled puppets.<br \/>\nSo that her dreams<br \/>\nWould-be haunted places<br \/>\nWhere Timmy is still down in the well<br \/>\nWhile Lassie scratches<br \/>\nAt the door.<\/p>\n<p>And they kept her up late at night<br \/>\nTo watch, unblinking,<br \/>\nAn endless parade of badly<br \/>\nDressed aliens and monsters<br \/>\nAnd creatures from the dark<br \/>\nShambling through the bleary late show hours<br \/>\nTheir story lines infused<br \/>\nWith the watcher&#8217;s own desperate<br \/>\nExhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning they moved her<br \/>\ninto a sunny room with<br \/>\nYellow walls and a color Zenith.<br \/>\nThey gave her the first remote<br \/>\n(the ultrasonic space commander)<br \/>\nAnd showed her stories about<br \/>\nA talking horse, or car, or ghosts<br \/>\nThat wouldn&#8217;t leave the house<br \/>\nAnd that girl in the bottle<br \/>\nPoor Major Nelson.
